Dómkirkjan í Reykjavík var vígð árið 1796 og var fyrsta byggingin sem reist var sérstaklega með tilliti til þess að Reykjavík skyldi verða höfuðstaður landsins. Tæpri öld síðar var svo Alþingishúsið reist þétt við kirkjuna. Síðar hafa þessi tvö hús myndað heild í hugum landsmanna og táknað órofa samhengi laga.
